Podcasting Pioneer Scott Sigler Launches Book Publishing House Dark Overlord Media

Dark Overlord Media

Dark Overlord Media

In a press release issued last Wednesday (8/19/2009), early podcaster, and the innovator of the worlds first podcast-only novel, Scott Sigler announced the launch of his book publishing house Dark Overlord Media. The intent of this new publishing house will be to produce books and other properties for established online personalities, which he is proving is possible with the release of his personal book, THE ROOKIE.

Those who know Sigler know that he is the kind of guy that gets shit done, plain and simple. I have had the opportunity to work on projects with Sigler many times over the years and can tell you from first hand experience, this is no overstatement. Sigler has created his own success turning a part time writing gig into a part time podcasting gig, and then turning that into a 3 book series with Crown publishing, which is a full time job. As if that was not enough, Sigler has now set out to help other entertainers with an established online audience succeed much more quickly, and without the headaches and tears, than he did.

According to the press release, “Sigler’s established online audience allowed him to put THE ROOKIE up for pre-sale on April 24, 2009, and immediately sell 1,000 copies. ‘Within three hours, we had capital for layout, design, printing and shipping,’ Sigler said. ‘The pre-sale made the book instantly profitable. That’s turns the traditional publishing model on its head.’”

Dark Overlord Medias first release, THE ROOKIE, is a ridiculously awesome first step towards taking over traditional book publishing… the same way Sigler has taken over podcasting. It’s not just a book, its a hardcover, signed, limited addition book printed with 16 plate, full color design. The book contains 50 pages of never before seen (or heard) content including back stories, player brackets and so much more.

Check out Scott Sigler below as he opens up the first ever hard cover print of THE ROOKIE book with his partner in crime, A Kovacs, teasing his fans with all of the new content. If you are interesting in listening to THE ROOKIE podcast before you get your copy of the book, you can find The Rookie Podcast on Podcast Alley here.

If you think you have what it takes to be the next Scott Sigler for Dark Overlord Media (a.k.a you have a large online presence and have something tangible to sell them, like a book) — you should contact A Kovacs via email (kovacs@scottsigler.net) or phone 858-336-3462.

President Obama to Appear on the 40 Minutes for Health Reform Podcast Today

President Obama Live

President Obama Live

According to a story published on TechCrunch, President Obama will be appearing on a podcast titled “40 Minutes for Health Reform“, hosted on the BlogTalkRadio website. The show will air live Today — Wednesday at 5 PM ET (2 PM PT) on both BlogTalkRadio’s program page found here, and on the Faith For Health site. Make sure you tune in on time for the Live show as the President will be speaking for the first 10 minutes, with the other 30 minutes of the program being dedicated to a roundtable discussion.

Social media use (such as this) chosen by the Obama team offers more proof that they are trying to run this country differently. They are adding much needed transparency into the government and supporting modern tools such as facebook, twitter and podcasting that are actively used by millions of people around the globe. All of this instead of relying solely on televisions and traditional news networks that are ignored by so many younger people today.

I’ve been impressed by how President Obama has adopted innovative social-media technology during his campaign and into his administration,” says Alan Levy, CEO of BlogTalkRadio. “We’re honored that he has selected BlogTalkRadio as his newest requisite platform for communicating directly with the American people.

This should pull in one of the largest audiences to date for the BlogTalkRadio website, now I only hope they are prepared for that traffic. It would be a shame to see the site go down if it does become very popular for that short amount of time. However, the episode should be available to show subscribers after the live stream has been converted. So if nothing else, if you are interested in healthcare reform, subscribe to the “40 Minutes for Health Reform” show to listen to the episode later.

Using Every Podcast Feature on Your New iPhone

iTunes Podcasting

iTunes Podcasting

A few months ago when the new iPhone 3g came out (and with that the new 3.0 operating system) Steve Jobs promised there were over 100 new features, but they did not take the time to document them all. Thanks to the team at CrunchGear as well as users across the country, we have started to find some of the new podcast related features on the new iPhone.

Now before you get all snarky and start complaining that some of these existed before, I will say that not ALL of these are new features… but some of these have been brought to light due to the other new features being added.

Below is a list of the top podcasting related features from the new iPhone and the iPhone 3.0 software upgrade. Do you know of some cool new features that we have overlooked? Leave a comment below and we will update this post to show the updated information. With over 100 new features added, this list can not possible be exhaustive of all the podcasting features.

New Features:

  • Variable Speed Playback
Clicking this icon you can change the speed of the podcast playback (audio only) from regular speed, 1/2 speed and 2x speed.
  • Chapter Browsing/Skipping
In a lot of the audio podcasts out there, the producers create chapters. These chapters work well for podio books (where the authors read chapters of the books) and with music podcasts (where the dj plays multiple tracks). If you don’t like something, you can skip ahead!
  • Send to a Friend
This feature allows you send a link to the podcast you are listening to so your friend can subscribe to the show from iTunes.
  • Instant 30 Second Rewind
This is a great addition for podcasting. If you find you zone out for a second doing work while listening to an episode and something catches your ear, you can do an instant 30 second rewind to listen to a segment again.
  • Date and Length of Episode
This information helps you know a) how old the episode is and b) if you have time to enjoy it all.
  • Time Remaining Left to Play
If you stop playing an episode somewhere in the middle, your iPhone remembers that. This indicator lets you know how much time is remaining until the end of the episode.
  • Indicator of New Episodes Not yet Downloaded
Sometimes you don’t get a chance to sync your iPhone with your computer… and for that reason your shows can get out of sync. This indicator lets you know how many additional episodes are in the feed, and lets you choose to download them to your phone to enjoy.

Screen Shots:
Below are a selection of screenshots from my first generation iPhone running the 3.0 software. And yes, I do maintain my own music channel on Mevio with awesome music in it :)
